Actually, a validation list would probably not be the best thing to use for this. Validation lists are special files (at least conceptually) that store a user identifier, an encrypted password, and optionally, some other data. The problem with getting at the "some other data" is you need a password to get at it and then the structure ends up being a mess of pointers to data structures. Validation lists are great for password protecting web content and even FTP (via an exit program) but I don't think are a good fit in this case.
