system has no problem opening a file where F specs record length is more than real file. just never use a described field in the program past the real record length. Also be aware that at run time, an ovrdbf can override to any file on disk. There is no requirement for internal field specs to match external file definition, or to internally describe all fields. You can have serious errors if add records do not update all the numeric fields. jim ----- Original Message ----- From: "murali dhar" <hydchap1@xxxxxxxxx> To: <RPG400-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, October 07, 2003 9:06 PM Subject: Using files as externally described as program decsribed > > Hi all, > > Iam analysing an RPG/400 program in which a file RPMF1 (which is externally described and having more than 20 fields) is program decsribed with 6fields only. > > I found in external description the record length is 208 > > And in program described the record length is 218. > > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------ > > 0040.00 F RPMF1 UF F 218 DISK > > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------- > > is this correct?can we have more Record length for an externally described file when iam using it as program described in my RPG? > > Thanks, > > Murali. > > > > hope my mails come without html tags ,sorry for inconvinience..... > > > > > --------------------------------- > Do you Yahoo!? > The New Yahoo!
