I was searching the archives today for RPG enhancements. Stumbled across this gem

Had a question today from a developer:
If I have a datastructure, full of variable length fields, how do I determine the offset to a particular field?

I suggested subtracting %addr(myDS) from %addr(myDSfield) and that should be the offset.

Is %offset still under consideration?

The %OFFSET() built-in function is still on our list of proposed enhancements, if that's what you're asking. But the fact that you can easily compute the offset today using a simple expression (as both you and Jon point out) is probably a good reason why you may not see an %OFFSET() built-in for a good long time (if ever).

Cheers! Hans
