This might be a bit of overkill, but it has come in handy for me
before...

I prototyped the c function atof() and used it to do my conversion for
me.  It ignores whitespace and stops at the first non-numeric character
it encounters.  The IBM Info Center example is 100.0 = atof('100elf')

This allows me to call it even if there is garbage data.  Negatives work
just as well.
