I have no idea what to suggest, but don't those APIs require either a null
terminated string (which I believe you have with OPTIONS(*STRING) specified)
and/or a linefeed at the end of them?

I should have mentioned also that the message I get without
checkShellCmd() is "No such path or directory".  Of course not, that's
why I'm trying to create it!
