Actually, that's not correct.

O_EXCL means "exclusively create."  You specify O_CREAT+O_EXCL when you
want open() to return an error if there's already a file by that name.
This way, you never accidentally change or overwrite an existing file.

Instead, Aaron probably wants to use the O_SHARE_xxx flags on the open()
call.  They are described here:
