Bill,
You've had many helpful replies, and perhaps you're tired of hearing about
possible solutions by now, but it seems that everyone is getting way too
complicated.
There's a simple solution that will work even on plain RPG. i.e.
D DS
D char1 1 8A
D Char1N 1 8S 0
D num1 S 8S 0
C Eval Char1N = Char1N + num1
or
C Char1N Add Num1 Char1N
or (if you're on V5R2 - in /Free)
Char1N += Num1;
Now this assumes that you know the length of the fields you're working with.
If not, then perhaps one of the other solutions is better for you.
