I am finally getting back to this, thanks for the suggestion Buck.

I have been doing some more research and have a couple more questions.  (BTW
Scott, thanks for the great examples on your site

I can use the QMHSNDPM API to produce an error and catch it with MONITOR
just fine, but I have to code my On-Error with *ALL instead of being able to
specify an exact code like the ones at this link
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/v5r1/ic2924/books/x091315205.htm.  

Is it possible to produce error codes, like the ones in the previous link,
and have them percolate to the calling program just like the QMHSNDPM works?
I was thinking I could use a range that wasn't already in use, like 10000 to
99999.

I think that the QMHSNDPM API is what you want.  Send an escape message.
You need to read the docs and understand the call stack (it includes the
subprocedures now!) but it should do what you want.
