Scott, this is perfect!

And it turns out I didn't have to muck around with packed fields.  All I
needed to do was use a character representation of my field and use the
"*ZONED" version of the routine.  In order to create a negative number,
I have to remember to switch the zone of the last digit, but that's no
biggie.

Thanks a million!  This routine is a lifesaver.
