Bob's field did not have the overlay keyword on it.  He was used a basing
pointer to place the field and the data structure into the same area of
memory.

I think it's because the precompiler that does the SQL stuff runs, it
doesn't understand the newer RPG keywords.   Bob's basing-pointer solution
circumvents that problem nicely, since the original data structure works
as it always has.

Try using the pointers to do the overlay instead of the overlay keyword,
just as Bob suggested... it should solve the problem.
