How do you get access to the custom technology centre? I had both an SMTP and POP client written in CL with no Java at all for a couple years. Uses IBM's free sockets API download (from the Custom Technology Center); I haven't looked recently to see what they still have for free. Wonder if I should add support for attachments? :-) In any case, I recommend researching what IBM has available before writing any sockets programs. These provide an excellent base, particularly for prototyping and testing but even for production. For learning what sockets can do on iSeries or AS/400, I don't think there's anything better. (Not for learning technical details -- for that, go to the manuals and probably Scott Klement's tutorial.)
