The QCMDEXC API expect a character string, but you're passing a varying character string. This is similar to passing it a zoned decimal field when it wants a packed field, etc. Unless you use a prototype as define it as CONST (Which I would highly recommend!!) you'll have to pass the exact same type of variable as the API is expecting. The reason you're getting a length error is that the first 2 bytes of a varying field are the length. But, the API is expecting all of the bytes in the variable to be data... So, the length is getting screwed up.
