Joe, > MOVEL WKFLD1 OUTFLD >or alternately (assuming outfld is 10A and wkfld1 is 3P0): > %subst(outfld:8:3) = %editc(wkfld1:'X'); If the orginal code was a MOVEL, why are you changing bytes 8-10 of outfld instead of bytes 1-3? >I say no it's not, because with a little >bit of help, it could easily be all fixed or all free without having to work >in the arcane %subst and %editc syntax. Arcane? My Webster defines arcane as: 1. hidden or secret 2. understood by only a few; esoteric IMHO, it is the rules of MOVE/MOVEL which are hidden, secret, or commonly misunderstood. And yes, I do (think I) know them as I've used them for over 20 years. I'd call the the MOVEL operation arcane, not the implicit EVAL. Doug
