But what about FOR READ ONLY?? I know it works from the STRSQL line on a
select, didn't try it in a program. 

I'm a firm believer in always telling the optimizer as much as possible
about what you're going to do with data, can't hurt, might help.

Seriously, what kind of lock? If you're not planning on updating that 
select
I'd do a FOR READ ONLY, if for no other reason than it makes it clear that
you're not updating.
