Tracy, >Ohhhhh!! ... I didn't remember it being called FMTDTA! It was called #GSORT on the S/3, S/32, S/34, and S/36. On the S/38, the command wrapper around the program was named FMTDTA in keeping with S/38 naming conventions. FMTDTA was great for migrating S/3 or S/3x code to the S/38, and until ALWCPYDTA(*OPTIMIZE) was added to OPNQRYF, it could outperform queries in the right circumstances. I consider it mostly a legacy support issue now, but I can see potential in unusual circumstances like Joel's "random" record sorting. Doug
