text to numeric BIF -- RPG400-L

Are there any BIF's that will allow you to convert the value of an alpha
field to a numeric field?  I currently am using MOVE to move the alpha
field value to a signed numeric, then Z-ADD to get the value into a packed
field.  It looks something like this:

     c                   move      alpha         signed
     c                   z-add     signed        packed

There has got to be a better way than this, especially now that I'm using
free format.
