Ok, then when I move the data structure to a field and then view the field
in debug with eval I see, in the emulator that I'm using, 'garbage'
characters in the field where the numerics should be.

You can do that.  A data structure will be treated as a large character
field in MOVE instructions.  Bob's technique should work fine.
