Bob, >Is your thinking that a data structure is fundementally different (on a >procedure call) from a character variable? My thinking is that it is not considered a character variable at the definition level (i.e., what you'd see during debug) and that as such is inherently excluded from opdesc support. My understanding from prior years of asking for full opdesc support for all field types is that this is outside of the control of the compiler team. My SWAG is that is also true of a DS name vs a true character variable. If the compiler were to lie and say the DS name was a character variable, would that have other ramifications? I don't know. I do know that over the years we've always been told opdesc support only (currently) applies to character fields... Doug
