The only succesful way I have ever found is to have the output field defined
as an alpha field and build it with an Eval statement in calcs.  I have
sometimes convinced the bean counters to accept a left-side minus sign
though, as a compromise.  The "N" edit code has become my friend.

It can't be surrounded in parentheses if the value is positive and you
can't condition an edit word.
