No, not confused, you could do it either way as you point out.  The MODS has
the advantage that you can refer to the before or after fields using the
same field names, simply by changing the occurrence, without having to
actually move the data, which could be useful if you had some routine (e.g.
print) that you wanted to use on both images.

By using based externally defined DS's, you can directly compare fields in
different occurrences, without having to move any data, so you could sort
the MODS for example.

However, what would be nice is if we could externally define subfields of an
array.
