One technique is to wait for an enormous amount of time, (is there a
*nomax?).

If you really want the program to end, then you send the dataqueue a
special command, like *SHUTDOWN.  Then when your data queue reading
program reads the data queue and sees *SHUTDOWN, it LR's out.
