If recompiling is an option when you want the debug information you can use Conditional Compilation to include/exclude certain statements. Has the benefit of avoiding the run-time check when not debugging. A negative is the need to recompile a debug version. You also have to be very careful that the program runs the same with and without the debug compile statements.
