To them, if it doesn't have scoped variables and long field names, it's not "good" code. Pshaw I say. The ability to CHAIN to a record and automatically have all those variables available to the entire program is one of the fundamental features of the RPG programming style. It's not like other programming languages, but it wasn't meant to be. RPG was meant to be able to process large amounts of database records quickly and efficiently, and over the years RPG also gained the ability to quickly and efficiently communicate directly with end users via a limited but powerful user interface (the 5250 data stream). I can still throw together a data entry screen quicker using SDA and RPG than I can using HTML and a servlet. I may be able to do a query quicker using SQL in a JSP, but as soon as you're talking data input, RPG's inherent data access capabilities make it much easier to incorporate data editing features. And I'm pretty darned good at both languages, so I think I may be qualified to make that judgement call. Ah well, no biggie. Gotta get ready to goto Famous Dave's with my family and my family-in-law. Big night out at the Pluta household <grin>. Joe
