I would tend to go with something like:

eval i = %checkr(' ':x)
if i > 0
eval %subst(x:i:1) = *blank
endif

Whatever way you do it, make sure that you have code to handle if the
string is empty.  E.g., in your "varying" example you don't want to be
changing the length from 0 to -1.
