Standards for handling SQLCOD<>0

I've got many sql statements in one program.  I did something stupid.  I
checked SQLCOD after every statement and just returned blanks.  Now I'd
like to find out where I am getting this message:
Token / was not valid. Valid tokens: , FROM INTO.
You see, I do a lot of PREPARE's.  I'll probably run this through the
debugger, however is there a suggested routine to do upon SQLCOD being
improper?  Like display an error message id and pass it variables SQL...,?
