My understanding is that you can only return a result set to CLI based program 
on the AS/400, of course there is lots of options from a external point of 
view.....ODBC, JDBC ADO etc....

Joe, that is an excellent request, and I'd like to see that also.

Have you also thought about using UDF's for some things?  Granted there are
situations where one or the other are a better fit.  I've got a good
explanation end-to-end of UDF's.

Me and this other bloke here coded an application that returns a result set
but currently we only call it from Domino.  It accesses BPCS.
