I have the following at one customer:
10m records, 45 logicals
14m records, 21 logicals

Run time performance doesn't seem to be an issue.  Save and restore - yes.
Shared access paths make a huge difference.  Managing a large application
like that is often best handled by automation.  http://www.os-solutions.com/
