Tom,

Thanks for the question!

First of all, I'm uncomfortable talking about anything that lies in the
future... You can believe what I say after you see it... Plus, if this
comes together the way we plan, my statements could be misinterpreted as
"vision", which I think is an over-used phrase. Don't believe that kind of
"vision" exists, myself.)

One of the problems we're having, in splitting 5250 into interactive and
batch jobs, is how to optimize the link between the two jobs. It wants to
BEHAVE as if it was one job... This is not so easy as it sounds.

===> The main problem with RPG is the cost of 5250 hardware. As that comes
down, more people will start to re-think their ideas on the 5250 programming
paradigm...

I don't think I need to stress how useful it would be: to use an existing
programming paradigm to create web apps... So far, everyone seems to be
sold that there is NO WAY to use the 5250 methodolgy to produce C/S and web
apps. I'm working on the assumption that the primary obstacle is actually
the cost of the hardware...

There's nothing wrong with Brad Stone's methodology, and Mel Rothman's
EasyCGI... There's nothing wrong with Joe's Revitalization (although I
still have a prejudice against Java) nor Nathan's approach either... I'm
not saying that...

(DISCLAIMER: Nathan has worked on, and may again contribute to, this
product. He does NOT have any "inside track" to licensing the technology,
in ANY case.)

What I *am* saying is that ALL these different approaches would benefit from
being accessible to the existing 5250 programming methodology. Most, but
not all, in the iSeries Community see the inherent advantages of this
tried-and-true method of programming. (Then again, most in the industry
think this idea is laughable.)

Anyhoo... In fact, the iSeries Community will benefit by having more ways
to skin this cat, if it begins from an existing programming paradigm.
That's my primary knock on WebFacing (other than it still uses expensive
hardware)...

| | This would be extremely useful, although not required, to
| | make ILE RPG the
| | premier languange for doing BOTH client/server and web apps...

| JT - what makes you say that?
