Check for Invalid data

I am doing an EVAL to put multiple fields into one variable.  Two of the
fields in the EVAL contained invalid data.   All of the  fields for the
EVAL are from a pf and they are defined as character data, but when I look
at the data I noticed that the values are NULL or hex 00.   My question is
how do I check for this invalid value before my EVAL?   I can not change
the pf because it is from package.
