Tom,

I don't understand how that works in my case. My client program sequence
is:

socket
connect
write
read

I want to be able to time out the 'read'.

Are you suggesting:

socket
connect
write
select
read

?

You'll want to try using select() It will wait for a timeout interval and
then you can test if there is any data to read. Check out the Redbook "Who
Knew You Could Do That with RPG IV?" SG24-5402-00
