%len(%trim(PMMCHN)) will do it - %TRIM omits white space, and delivers
only what's entered...

Subject: LENGTH OF FIELD

In the following code I am trying to check an input field with a length
of
8 char.
Pmmchn is a Machine Number. When someone keys in a machine number
with less than 8 char, it takes it anyway. I suspect that the field is
being padded
with blanks. Can anyone give me a suggestion to check my Machine Number
and make sure it is 8 characters every time?

C If %len(PMMCHN) <> 8
C EXSR CLRSR
C Eval ERRMSG = ERR(16)
C LeaveSr
C EndIf

PS: I'm still waking up. <g>
