The trivia was to explain why it was A-D, J-M, and 1-4, but you really don't
have to use mental hex conversions to make this work.  Only do:

  Commas?       Yes: 1-2                No: 3-4
  Print zero?   Yes  First      No: Second  (within the above groups)
  Sign?         CR: A-D         Trailing minus: J-M     None: 1-4

The first two questions get you to 1-4.  You probably already remember the
trailing minus sign codes start at J.  Just count letters starting at J, or at
A, or at N depending on what sign handling you want.
