Adam, there's an entry in the FAQ that has a program that does
something similar to what you need.  It checks for bad decimal data
in zoned fields; it would be easy to modify it to check for '*' in
character fields, and possibly change them.  (Currently it just prints
a report with the rrn and field name.)
