Sorry about the confusion. If you have the object name (w/library) and type, you can retrieve it's attributes to see if you should check for logicals. Why don't you use CHGPF x srcfile(y/z) in stead of deleting all the manual work you outline? CHGPF normally handles all that stuff automatically.
