I agree with you Mike - you should only worry about performance if it becomes a problem. >> I remember years ago hearing from an IBMer that all RPG programs should be coded in-line (no EXSRs), to reduce page faults during execution (thus saving I/O and time)...... They only started saying that when it became obvious that the S/38 (mainly I suspect because of hardware and cost constraints) couldn't perform with programs designed in the highly modular fashion that was intended for the platform. Rochester's performance people (guys like John Sears were often involved) were dispatched to resolve problems and the universal answer became "Make it bigger - make it straight line". It was no longer a valid approach in the latter days of the S/38 - it has never really been true for AS/400 / iSeries. The additional effort required to maintain such code far outweighs any potential performance advantage - even if there was one.
