did you not read my first reply?

not an indicator like *IN13, but an SQL indicator variable. A host variable
declared to receive an indication that the field is null. In any outer join,
records that don't have a match will be returned but the fields from the
record that is missing from the join will be returned as null. Any time you
have a null capable field returned in your program, you must code the null
indicator variable.

the variable is defined in your program, not in the file.

this is clearly described in the manuals.
