One interesting use would be to have a 'calleable
generic file display program'. Thus the generic field
could be a , say, 70 char line on a subfile display.
Then calling this generic pgm with a file name as parm

(from within another interactive pgm) would display a
sub-file screen with the records of the file being
displayed. This generic pgm could then return the
record being selected from the subfile to the original
pgm for further processing. I hope you get the idea.
I once tried to do something like this but have given
up for the time being. I used a statement such as :
select * from FILE into :Yline
where Yline being a 70-char variable that is used on
the sub-file screen. However only the first field of
the file is being placed in Yline. I posted this
requirement to the RPG list a few weeks ago but with
limited success. Someone referred to me the Dec 2000
edition of News/400 where there is an article on a
calleable generic file display pgm. Unfortunately I
could not get hold of that copy. If someone on the
list does have this edition on CD, could he kindly
copy/paste the article to me (hope there's no
copyright infringement here...)

Regards
