Yes, I have done that.  It is still a pain.  Even if it is simple.

How are you forgetting variables?

d fileds      e ds       extname(file)
d saveds      e ds       extname(file) prefix(sv_)

      eval   saveds = fileds

 ... chain to file for error checking

      eval   fileds = saveds

There are no individual variable names required.
