Phil, I believe you would still have to close and reopen the cursor because the SQLDA would be referenced as the host variable in the USING DESCRIPTOR clause of the OPEN cursor statement. When something changes, the SQLDA would need to be rebuilt to reflect that difference. I was following the same open/close procedures as you, only I didn't think to put the values of the screen variables in the :SELECT host variable. Rolf set me straight on that. Maybe someone like him with more experience with embedded SQL could give you a more definite answer. It's nice to know that I can use the SQLDA if I need to, but in this case, there was no good reason for me to use it. -----Original Message----- From: Phil [mailto:sublime78ska@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 22, 2001 9:25 PM To: rpg400-l@midrange.com Subject: RE: SQLLEN of packed field in SQLDA ... When the select statement changes I close and reopen the cursor, when I add a record or delete a record I close and reopen the cursor, if someone presses F5=Refresh I close and reopen the cursor. Does using the SQLDA take away the need of closing and opening the cursor? Phil
