The IBM AFP Printsuite for iSeries licenced program (5798-AF3) includes a
utility called Advanced Print Utility (APU) which is a post-spool
reformatter.  It 'transforms' existing spooled output to incorporate
customised features such as barcodes, font changes, etc.  You may want to
consider this (or similar tools) as an easier alternative to embedding
print-stream changes yourself, (which may be device-specific).
