CRTCSVDTA does just this. There is a companion tool called EDTFLDMAP that 
lets you specify formatting rules for a particular file. This rules file 
(like your XXXFIELDS) is read in conjunction with the input file (like your 
XXX data) and for each field (generally holding date values) in the rules 
file I extract the matching value from the current record in input data file. 
Once I've processed all the fields mentioned in the rules file I move on to 
the next record in the input file. I actually process all field from the 
input file, but only do special formatting for those mentioned in the rules 
file.

Feel free to take this off list if you think it's getting too detailed for 
others to be interested, but at least it's on topic as my routines are all 
RPG(LE) ;-)
