1) What does this have to do with RPG?  

2) When you say that "neither work", what do you mean?  Do you get an
   error?  If so, please post the error.   If not, what determines
   whether it 'worked' or not?  

3) Are you trying to write an RPG program that reads excel files?  Are you
    familiar with Microsoft's BIFF file format (the file format that
    excel uses)?
