Thanks Joe Guisto and Keith McIntosh (Keith sent off list). The answer was CHGDSPF RSTDSP(*NO) on both display files and use ExFmt on the SFLCTL (Read wouldn't work). That combination does exactly what I want it to do (and I think I might even be able to get away from having to UsrOpn STR002FM, gotta test that). Thanks to all.
