See the DDS docs for DSPATR(&pgmvar), which uses a 1-byte program-to-system
field to set the desired display attributes like red, reverse image, etc
I've
completely moved away from indicators in my DSPF except for things like
controlling subfile keywords or other record-level conditioned keywords.

Cursor positioning can be handled with the CSRLOC keyword.  Since it does
not
support a variable containing a field name, I use calls to QDFRTVFD to
extract
the field's row and column number at run-time.

I don't use Fx-key response indicators either.  I use the dspf INFDS to
determine what key was pressed.  You need *very* few indicators for a DSPF,
no
matter how many fields you have on the screen, unless you must condition the
presence of the field for overlapping fields or whatever.
