Patrick, my sincere apologies for my earlier post (below). It is a load of 
drivel
and thank you Barbara for not chastising me severely - I should know better. I
really should stop and think as opposed to replying from the hip.

Barbara, of course, put her finger on it. Thr problem is with the externally 
defined
field. You should simply define an externally defined data structure for the
relevant file and the %size will work.
