That was what I was going to suggest. If you suspect that you may have a null embedded somewhere in the field (i.e. not in the first byte), you can either use CHECK (or CHEKR) or -- especially if you want to replace any nulls with more helpful characters -- load your field into an array and check the array byte by byte.
