  • Subject: RE: "OVERLAY" in dds

I think maybe this is the best i could do and minimize possibility of
un-consistent of data :)
actually what i want is something like one of these:
1. there is a prefix keyword in program-described data structure (not just
for external one).
2. or there is an overlaying keyword in dds so i could use the prefix too
:).
Seem to me that both of them can't be implemented yet.
anyway at least RPG had an overlaying keyword so i don't have to use pointer
just to do the same thing the 'overlay' do in DS.
so thank you all for your thought.

best regards,
Danny

The copy books is a good idea, but surely you don't need
to maintain 3 or 4 DDS each with 250 fields.

I would use the external definitions to define most of the fields
Then the /COPY has only overlays and/or overlaps .
I use a method like this for arrays as DDS does not define arrays.

DQSMF DS EXTNAME(physical file)
D PREFIX (Q)
D/COPY $VISMFQ
DLSMF DS EXTNAME(physical file)
D PREFIX (L)
D/COPY $VISMFL
