one thing I remember :

pointers need to be aligned on some boundary (16 byte)
which can have some efect on data structures containing
pointers. I don't know whether the whole ds is aligned
or the compiler (or whatever component is responible
for that) inserts extra space to align just the pointers.

Try to run your program under debug and look at the
hex representation of the ds.
