After much fooling around, I believe this is the only feasible SQL approach. I've played with several kinds of queries, and your suggestion of breaking the problem down into multiple steps makes the most sense. If the dates weren't separated into subcomponents, I think a single UPDATE could do it fairly easily as mentioned in one of the other posts. Many thanks to all who responded.
