One easy way to do it is to check the log for the text "Cannot connect"
before you check for numerical codes. This means that ftp services aren't
available because of 1) software not running 2) the server is down 3) the IP
address is wrong 4) etc..

Hello everyone,

Curious to know if there is any way to verufy if a remote host has its FTP
server up and running. In a CL batch program I check to see if the host is
up by using the ping command and rcvmsg. This works ok, but it does not
tell me if the remote system has its FTP server running. I can put some
code in to review the FTP log after the transaction to look for any of the
standard FTP numerical error msgs, but I'd like to know before I try to send
anything if they're FTP is up and running. Any Ideas?

Thanks for any help!

Justin Kiteley
